A family is left in shock and disbelief after a 63-year-old Swakopmund resident ended her own life by gassing herself in her vehicle. Mrs Jaqueline Carin van der Merwe was discovered in her vehicle in her family home in Swakopmund’s Ocean View on Saturday shortly after noon.

Mrs Van der Merwe’s husband drove to Walvis Bay on Saturday morning and only Mrs Van der Merwe and the gardener were home.
The gardener told the Police Mrs Van der Merwe sent him to buy milk. Upon his return he could not find her anywhere.
Upon Mr Van der Merwe’s return from Walvis Bay he and the gardener searched the house, both inside and outside. It was then when they discovered the garage was locked from the inside.
They broke down the door and discovered Mrs Van der Merwe seated in her vehicle, the engine still running and a hose pipe inserted into the vehicle’s exhaust and the other end into the car.
Mrs Van der Merwe was rushed to the Cottage MediClinic where she was declared deceased. The late Mrs Van der Merwe has been battling depression, according to a report by the Erongo’s regional crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu.
